This page provides travel information for those arriving by either car or plane into the Chapel Hill area. Additionally, there is information for traveling and parking around Chapel Hill.

Flying

If you are flying, it is easiest to fly into the Raleigh-Durham International (RDU) Airport. There are a few options for transportation between RDU and Chapel Hill:

  • Taxi/Uber/Lyft
  • Car Rental
  • Shuttle service
  • Bus

Several car rental services are available at the airport. Then take I-40 W, then take Exit 273A to Chapel Hill. Detailed directions from RDU Airport to UNC's campus are listed here. Alternatively, you can use 120 E Cameron Ave, Chapel Hill, NC 27514 (Department of Physics and Astronomy) as a destination, for those using GPS. 

Taxis are easily accessible at RDU Aiport. RDU Taxi Inc. is recommended by RDU Aiport. Prices typically range from $40-50.

Services such as Uber and Lyft are readily available in the area. Prices typically range from $20-35.

Shuttle services are also provided from the RDU Airport to locations in Chapel Hill. Skylink is one available shuttle service, though some hotels may offer shuttle services as well.

There are also public transportation options, though these tend to be less convenient. Buses between RDU Airport and Chapel Hill operate through GoTriangle. To get to from RDU Airport to Chapel Hill, you will need to first take the 100 from RDU Airport to the Regional Transit Center (RTC). From there you can take the 800 from RTC to Chapel Hill.

Driving

Traveling I-40 W: Take exit 273A for N Carolina 54 West toward Chapel Hill.

 Traveling I-40 E: Take exit 266 for N. Carolina 86 toward Chapel Hill. Slight right onto N. Carolina 86/S/Martin Luther King Jr Blvd.

Chapel Hill Transit

Chapel Hill provides free transit. No ID or commuter card is necessary. Since parking on campus is scarce, we recommend taking public transit to campus.  Routes and schedules can be found hereFor those staying at the recommended hotels, we have provided the bus/walking routes between the hotels and UNC below.

Hampton Inn & Suites Chapel Hill/Carrboro:

There is a bus stop just outside of the hotel on Main St. The J Route or CW Route buses will be your most regular options towards campus. You will want to get off at the South Columbia/Abernathy Hall stop on campus.

Carolina Inn:

Carolina Inn is just across the street from Sitterson Hall. Walking directions are provided here

Park & Ride Options from Carrboro:

If you are staying near Carrboro, public parking is free in Carrboro. Therefore if a bus stop is not easily accessible from your hotel, you can park at the public parking lot neighboring the Hampton Inn & Suites Chapel Hill/Carrboro, and take the J Route or CW Route buses towards campus, as mentioned above. 

Chapel Hill/UNC Parking

Parking in Chapel Hill and at UNC is limited, therefore we recommend using public transportation to arrive on-campus if possible.

Parking in Chapel Hill is primarily paid parking between the hours of 8am-5pm. Parking lot and street parking are typically free in the evening. For the conference, the closest Chapel Hill parking is available at the Rosemary/Columbia Lot, the Wallace Parking Deck, and the CVS Plaza Parking Deck. The lot is $1.50/hr, while the two parking decks are $1/hr (though CVS adds $2 to your final parking total if you park the entire time between 10am-2pm).

Paid parking is also available on UNC's campus. For the conference, the closest on-campus lots are the Rams Head Parking Deck and the Morehead Lot. On-campus parking is $1.50/hr.
